The Jane Restaurant in Antwerp Belgium by Piet Boon where Old Meets New in this Stylish Classic Modern Restaurant Interior

If you love the combination of old classic and new modern contemporary styles in interior design, you’ll love this as much as I do. The Jane Restaurant in Antwerp, Belgium is easily another of my favourite restaurant interiors as it has been designed with pure sophistication and elegance, providing a modern luxurious interior within an historic piece of architecture of an old church. I am hoping to venture to Belgium at some point in the near future for a little trip, probably one of those road trip adventures that I like to go on… and if I do, I would absolutely love to visit the Jane Restaurant.

The Jane Restaurant in Antwerp Belgium by Piet Boon

The Restaurant was designed in 2014 by the incredibly talented architect and designer Piet Boon; and I have to say he has given the interior of this building the most amazingly glamorous transformation, injecting elegance and sophisticated luxury into every element of the design.

Based on the design studios strong belief in authenticity, functionality and materials that ‘age beautifully’ the studio chose to restore only what was completely necessary in the chapel to preserve as much of the original as possible. The original ceiling amongst other original features conveys the “pure, understated and respectful environment that serves as the authentic host for the ultimate fine dining experience.” The original altar made way for the new contemporary kitchen that – “just like the atelier- is embraced by glass, like a modern shrine.” It allows the diners to witness everything the staff creates for them, a bit like an elegantly modern theatrical performance with food.

The shared passion amongst the design team to work with pure, rich materials is expressed in the interior space in which high quality outstanding natural stone, leather and oak wood are used throughout. Moreover Piet Boon Studio, as with many of the studio’s projects, collaborated with a number of world leading creative partners to shape the “fine dining meets rock ’n roll” character of the overall space and experience, creating an almost divine ambience, atmosphere and aesthetic.

The huge windows were designed by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel of Studio Job, consisting of 500 unique panels. These are inspired by the church’s original function; “foam spatulas, sunflowers, devils, skulls, babies, Jesus on the cross, dice, apple cores, wrenches, ice cream cones, a canon, croissants, penguins, trophies, gas masks and birthday cakes” portray a contemporary translation of the old historic versions of the stained-glass windows. “Archetypes from various worlds each tell masterpiece stories of good and evil, rich and poor, life and death as well as good food and religion.”

The absolutely stunning ‘piece de résistance’ in the centre of the restaurant is a 800 kilograms-weighing gigantic chandelier, measuring 12 metres by 9 metres with over 150 lights on it, designed by the talented Beirut-based lighting design studio PSLAB. The chandelier was created to complement the beautiful classic surroundings of the architectural interior, in such a way that it contributes to the intimate and ambient divinity of the church interior. This beautiful elegant chandelier aims to create a sophisticated scenic ambience by seamlessly combining artistry, design and engineering.

Where Old Classic Meets New Modern

As an interior designer and interior architect myself, I absolutely love this sophisticated and luxurious restaurant interior design as there is really something special about how beautiful an interior design is when the old historic and traditional is combined seamlessly with the new, modern and contemporary. In the case of the Jane Restaurant, it has created a very elegant and sophisticated look while also being luxurious, stylish and trendy. The interior, colour scheme and purely beautiful materials reflect the original divinity of the space and fully respect the historic architecture of the building. One of the most aesthetically beautiful interiors that I’ve seen and I’ll bet from the moment you walk into the space, you would be in awe of its beauty.
