Maynard’s Old Sweet Factory – John Kerr and Associates – Modern Extension

I have been researching how other factory buildings have had modern extensions and additions added to them as the building that I have chosen was built as a brewery, has had many factory uses over the years and is now currently a brewery again. I would like to add a possibly a more modern extension to it, so it was important to look at what other architects have produced.

The extension and conversion design of the old Maynard’s sweet factory in Hove was carried out by John Kerr and Associates. They have added the roof extension to the building, using curved glass that adds contrast to the original architecture of the building. However, although a modern addition, it does not look out of place due to the vast amount of glazing already within the original structure.

I really like the design of the modern roof as it still respects the original architecture of the building. Also the roof space will allow a lot of natural light to enter which is something that I would like to achieve with my project.
