Victorian Glasshouses – Research for Extension / Insertion

While designing the interior for the building, I also plan on adding some architectural elements in the form of an extension / insertion on and into the south side of the building. To start with, I have looked into the architecture of some well known Victorian Glasshouses as they could respect the architecture of the existing building which is also Victorian.

One main thing that I have noticed about a lot of the Victorian Glasshouses is that they all appear quite curved. Whereas, the Albion Brewery does not have curves within its architecture other than above some of the windows. I quite like how the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens Glasshouse has arched windows like the front of the Albion Brewery. There is no doubt that a glass extension like this will allow a lot of daylight into the space. Also I like the idea of having a roof garden / terrace and a glasshouse seems like a logical addition.

I intend to produce some sketches inspired by Victorian glasshouses, adding designs inspired by them to my building. These ideas will follow in another blog post, hopefully this evening.
